It's Watergate. On servers.

On the eve of the presidential election, a conspiracy threatens to alter the outcome of the vote—and the future of American politics. At the heart of the plot is a powerful computer program, aimed at rooting out hypocrisy among politicians to expose their truths . . . and ours. Left to unravel the conspiracy is a bitter, hotheaded former journalist, but he's just not sure he cares enough to get to the bottom of it.

I am not usually a lover of short reads (and to me this is a novella, not a short story - but what do I know). I want all the details, the texture, the full on examination of the nooks and crannies. The longer a book, the more likely it is to become one of my favorites. But I loved this.
I love that Richtel gave me both reason to remember why he's one of my favorite thriller writers, and pause over the moral implications of what he convinced me might actually be a(very scary)possibility. All in 100 pages.
The convincing part is no surprise - the author is a Pulitzer-prize winning technology reporter. That he produced something really satisfying in that short format shows he's also a terrific writer of fiction. I will definitely be buying his next novel.

Floodgate A Short Story edition by Matt Richtel Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

.

Buyer beware.

Last night, I heard Mr. Richtel do a radio interview.
Floodgate sounded interesting, so I bought it through the store and read it this morning.
I like "Floodgate."

However...I think its "packaging" is misleading

1. says the length of this purchase is 100 pages.
It is...it's just not 100 pages of "Floodgate." "Floodgate" comes in around 46 pages of the total 100 page download file.
The rest of the file is previews of 2 upcoming (non-Floodgate) offerings.

2. The entire file - the title at the top of my iPad - is named "Floodgate A Short Story."
So, when I read past Floodgate, into "The Cloud" and "Devil's Plaything" excerpts, the iPad title still listed my reading
as "Floodgate." I had to realize I was now reading a different story.

In the file's defense

1. The table of contents does clearly list "Floodgate" and the excerpts for "The Cloud" and "Devil's Plaything." But, as I didn't expect excerpts and originally didn't know what to make of that, I skimmed past it and began reading.

2. The publisher did insert `tickler pages' before "The Cloud" and "Devil's Plaything."

Putting everything together, I figured out the deal here.
Though I like "Floodgate," I'm not happy about the packaging.
I feel like I paid for "The Cloud" and "Devil's Plaything" advertising.
I know, it was only 99-cents.

The larger issue is whether I would decide to purchase unseen another HarperCollins offering. I think not. I think HarperCollins should be clearer regarding the contents of their files. They and the author are doing themselves a disservice.

The irony is that it took longer to write this review than it did to read "Floodgate."
It was a waste of time in my opinion. It is a very short story which i found dreadfully slow.
This was really interesting while it lasted. I know it was a short story, but it just stopped with no sense of an ending. I was reading on a kindle and it just ended at 47% and asked if I wanted to read a preview of his new novel "The Cloud" that is coming out in Feb 2013. I flipped through that for a few pages expecting that the remainder of the Floodgate novel would finally show up. It seems that the preview of the new novel is longer than the actual novel. I was very disappointed and am not convinced that I even got the whole novel. Unless the rest of the story mysteriously shows up I won't be reading any more of his books.
Matt Richtel is an excellent journalist for the New York Times and has brought his taught writing style to this work of fiction. The pacing is fast, the concepts are very, VERY interesting and the resolution is satisfying.

I love these types of books that mix politics, technology and engaging characters.

This is my first review of a book on and after reading Floodgate I felt compelled to post.

Read this book and thank me after.
Fiction and Tech are not my favorite genres to read,
so I was hesitant to order Floodgate BUT it was the best $0.99 I've spent... probably this decade.

Even if the aforementioned topics are not your 'cup of tea', the author still manages to spellbound the reader via the suspense, mystery and love story that are laced throughout the digital pages of this novella.

Great read for a lazy rainy day or relaxing by the pool.
I finished "Floodgate" a few days ago. It's a terrific read - moves quickly, pieces fit together, plot is believable, and it's very funny. As a writer, I really appreciate how well written it is, every sentence, every paragraph; great editing. It's not easy to develop a character as well as Richtel did in a story with that much plot. I may have bad dreams about whether there's a record somewhere of me telling my iMac what I really think of some FB status updates (and if some of my "friends" find out, I'm cooked), but I'll forgive even that.
I bought this story as soon as I heard the author's interview on NPR, which is funny since computers are definitely not my thing. This short story was well-crafted and entertaining. The author really packed a lot in such a short piece, which had to be difficult. The pacing was good, I felt as though I had enough background on the character in order to develop a bond, and the storyline was very original. I almost never Internet surf, I hate e-mail, and often misplace my cellphone. Still, the author had me pondering about computer usage and privacy issues at the end of the story. I look forward to reading more by this author.
